Piano Concert, Piano Trio
Johann Rufinatscha spent most of his life as a musician in Vienna, where he was in demand as a teacher of composition and a successful pianist. The piano also plays a major part in his works, starting with his early piano sonatas, followed by his piano pieces dedicated to Franz Liszt and Robert Schumann, his numerous transcriptions of his own symphonic works for piano duet, his piano quartets, his sole piano concerto (presented on this CD in an arrangement for two pianos made by the composer), and culminating in his glorious piano trio premiered in 1869 in Vienna. „Performed at the Hellmesberger Quartet Society on the 10th of this month was a new trio by J. Rufi natscha, which was a thoroughgoing brilliant success. The generally jubilant applause carries all the more weight because Hellmesberger’s quartet evenings are attended by the élite of the musically educated public, which is neither used to being liberal with its signs of approval nor to being infl uenced in any way. Furthermore, only classical music of quality and distinction is accepted for performance in the fi rst place.” Johann Rufi natscha (1812-1893) Klavierkonzert Klaviertrio
