String Quartets 2

Imst/Brennbichl in the Upper Tyrol, about 1840

Josef Netzer was above all a gifted symphonic and operatic composer.  Chamber  music actually played a minor part in his output, although he worked in this musical genre all his life. He composed his fi rst string quartet and his piano trio as early as in 1836, the second string quartet in 1846, and the third in the year of revolution, 1848. All of these works were written in Vienna. The fourth and last of his string quartets was composed in 1854-55 in Graz, where Netzer spent the last ten years of his life as the director of music at the Municipal Theater and as the celebrated director of music of  the  Musical  Society  of Styria. Even in his chamber music the Tyrolean composer Josef Netzer proves to be a tremendously gifted master with a wealth of ideas. It is completely incomprehensible that his works fi rst had to be made accessible again through these CDs.   Josef  Netzer (1808-1864) Streichquartett Nr. 3 in Es-Dur Streichquartett Nr. 4 in E-Dur Josef Netzer, Leipzig 1842
