Works for Piano 1
The works for piano by Josef Alois Ladurner presented on this CD were on the program at the 1997 Chamber Music Concert. It was the fi rst time that a representative survey of the creative production of this remarkable Tyrolean composer had ever been provided. The chamber concert held annually at the Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum serves to introduce unknown Tyrolean composers particularly of 19th-century chamber music. Josef Alois Ladurner (1769- 1851) came from a family of musicians from South Tyrol. Besides his clerical profession, Ladurner was devoted particularly to music. He was especially partial to the piano, of which he was a recognized master. In the course of his mainly educationally oriented activities he trained a number of talented players, usually doing so free of charge. Many of his piano works demonstrate his commitment to teaching in their method. Besides a few smaller works for the church and works on music theory, it is above all Ladurner’s piano compositions that have found recognition beyond regional borders and were printed by famous publishers, such as Schott in Mainz and Falter and Son in Munich, between 1810 and 1830. His works for piano are skillfully fashioned pieces, demanding in their virtuosity, and with creative depth in the sensitive command of the tonal strengths of the instrument. Ladurner’s piano writing features colorful, modern harmony and a compositional technique characterized by artistry and profi ciency.
