Tyrolean Passion and Easter Music in Song 1992

Lenten veil of Stegen, about 1780

This CD is a special gem for it provides examples of the hymns that Tyrolean church singers (Kirchensinger) have handed down for generations via oral tradition. The music is unique in many respects. We cannot overemphasize the value of the cultural treasure preserved for the Tyrol by the study and documentation of this extraordinary tradition. Moreover,  these  CDs  are particularly remarkable. On the one hand, with their original recording  of  the  Passion of  Stegen  in  the  Pustertal, they provide an idea of the Kirchensinger’s unique kind of singing. On the other they demonstrate  how  a  careful handling of this special form of  transmission  is  possible today in the framework of an actualizing cultivation of the folk song. Both recordings are unique examples of their kind and are worthy of unreserved appreciation.
