Music from Stams Monastery XXI
The music archive of Stams Monastery is important not only for the history of the monastery’s own cultivation of music but also for that of the Tyrol’s musical life in general, especially in the 18th century, forwhichitswonderfulholdings are irreplaceable. Whatever was lost at other music institutions has usually been preserved at Stams Monastery, for instance compositions from the St Jakob parish church in Innsbruck (CD 44) or from the cathedral church in Brixen. Compositions by the last important director of the cathedral music to work at the latter, Leopold Strach (1699- 1755), have survived almost only at Stams. Among them are the two festive masses recorded on this CD. They provide a convincing impression of the grandeur and originality of the Tyrolean musical tradition, particularly in the domain of musica sacra.
