Music from Stams Monastery II

Franz Michael Hueber, Angels’ Concert (detail), 1729. Fresco in the stairwell leading to the prelate’s quarters and Bernardisaal (hall) in Stams Monastery
While CD 22, Music from Stams Monastery I, presents mainly works by the Stams choir director and composer- in-residence Stefan Paluselli OCist (1748-1805), including his original Singspiel (spoken dialogue with interpolated songs) “Diana et Ursus” (Diana and the Bear) in an exemplary recording (tracks 23-28), this CD provides works by visitors to Stams, i.e. composers who stayed in the monastery for only a short time and whose works have been preserved there. These include Georg Paul Falk (1713-1778), Johann Michael Malzat (1749-1787), Sebastian Haindl (1727-1812), Johann Zach (1699-1773), Nonnosus Madlseder (1730- 1794) and Johann Elias de Sylva (1716- 1798). These older broadcast recordings provided the fi rst introduction to music by these composers. In the years to follow, the Music from Stams Monastery CD series devoted a separate musical monograph to almost every one of them.
