Tyrolean Musical Treasures 24
Tyrolean Christmas Concert 2001
Christmas Music from the Repertoire of the Innsbruck Court Music Ensemble
and the Royal Religious Institution for Ladies in Hall
This CD features Christmas motets and a Magnificat by Johann Stadlmayr (about 1575-1648), the director of the court ensemble of singers and instrumentalists in Innsbruck from 1607 to 1648, and a Christmas Mass by Christoph Sätzl (1592/93-1655), the director of music at the royal religious institution for ladies of rank in Hall from 1632 to 1655.
To link the music of the Innsbruck court ensemble with that of the ladies’ institution in Hall was the objective of our Tyrolean Christmas Concert in 2001. The program was structured around the idea of a 17th-century Christmas mass, expressing an atmosphere both contemplative and festive at the same time with the splendor of Baroque sound. In order to realize this concept we devised a harmonious sequence and a somewhat logical scenario. Furthermore, we tried to make these wonderful compositions, which were all created and published in the Tyrol, display their intended effect as effectively as possible by means of a colorful instrumentation.
